About UNCG Guarantee Mentoring

 Jo Anne Safrit, '68 | 2 Mentees

Since the inception of UNCG Guarantee mentors have been a part of the model for success. Originally a partnership with the UNCG Alumni Association, the UNCG Guarantee Mentoring Program has grown alongside the program. Starting with 35 alumni mentors in 2010 and growing into hundreds of dedicated mentors who are also staff, donors, community members and even Guarantee alumni, this initiative has become one of the most rewarding aspects of the program for scholar and mentors alike.

With time rightfully comes changes and evolution.  With a clear understanding of the significant impact our mentors make to the Guarantee Program our staff has developed a vision for a sustainable initiative that will guide this program for years to come.

We envision a mentoring initiative that supports the development of meaningful and impactful relationships between our scholars and committed professionals who understands that a genuine mentorship can make the difference.

Mentor Testimonials

"I became interested in the Guarantee Scholar program as soon as this program was announced. I was amazed that an anonymous donor had given many millions to establish such a program for students with promise who were from low income families. I am grateful to have had this opportunity to be

supportive of two wonderful young women in the program, and I hope to follow them and their activities as long as possible. I have gained as much as they have, perhaps more. This is a wonderful program, and I am proud to have been associated with it since its inception. Volunteer…the rewards will be numerous!!"

"I've had the honor and privilege of being a UNCG Guarantee mentor since 2011. During my time as a mentor I have been able to mentor and and get to know four young Spartans as they matriculated through UNCG. This program has been on of the best and most rewarding ways for me to give back to the University that has done so much for me.  As a mentor, my goal is to help my scholars discover themselves as young adults, encourage them in their academic studies, and help them find their place on campus in the UNCG community. Often times they eventually become like family. It is truly a rewarding experience and would encourage anyone looking for a way to support their community and help nurture future leaders to consider becoming a mentor."

"My name is Dominick and I am a mentor to three Guarantee scholars and I have enjoyed every bit of my time with them!  As a former Guarantee scholar myself, I know first-hand how important it is to know someone who is familiar with the college curriculum, the UNCG campus and culture, and know the process of searching for grad school or job opportunities. As a recent grad, class of '14, I think the thing I've found most rewarding about mentoring is being able to guide my mentees through their first few years. My contribution to my mentees is helping them comprehend and navigate these shifting challenges, and it is one of the most rewarding ways I can think of to give back to UNCG Guarantee for all it has given me."
