Learn A Foreign Language

English, Spanish, and Chinese are the top three languages spoken in America. In high school, I took Spanish and somehow I forgot everything. I can manage small talk in Spanish, but the sad reality is that the language can be forgotten if you do not practice. The moral of the story is that you should learn to speak more than one language in college. There are groups to help you keep up on your skills. There will come a time when you need to speak to someone in your profession and there will be language barriers along the way. If you speak more than one language, no matter your job search, you will be moved to the top part of the application stack. I can recall many times where employers were in search of people who spoke multiple languages.

America is a cauldron pot of different cultures and ethnicities, and you do not want to limit your access to opportunities because you are unable to socialize with others. Knowing other languages could save a life, bridge a communication barrier (language), and/or open up an opportunity. You can expose yourself to different languages by watching movies, listening to music from other cultures, or going to culturally diverse restaurants. Find friends that differ in nationalities. If you're fancy, you can buy Rosetta Stone to learn on your free time or on the go.
